About Kampo

What is Kampo?

Kampo is a system of traditional Eastern medicine that developed uniquely in Japan. Originating in China in ancient times, it was introduced to Japan about 600 years ago and has since evolved to suit the Japanese climate and the constitution of its people. In Kampo medicine, we investigate illness based on information gathered by "directly examining" the patient's subjective symptoms and body. In other words, we emphasize "individual differences" such as physical constitution and lifestyle habits, and diagnose based on the theories of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements and the Qi-Blood-Water concept. Treatment aims to adjust the fundamental balance of the body while harmonizing it as a whole. Therefore, it differs greatly from Western medicine, which diagnoses and treats through objective analysis and various tests using modern science. Furthermore, the term "Kampo medicine" encompasses not only pharmacological treatment using Kampo medicines but also acupuncture and moxibustion (stimulating acupoints), anma (massage and acupressure), and dietary therapy (preventing and treating diseases through food). After Western medicine became widely adopted in Japan, Kampo gradually declined. Recently, however, Kampo medicine is being re-evaluated because there is an increasing number of people who require a fundamental improvement of their constitution or who experience some form of ailment despite showing no abnormalities in medical tests.

Symptoms & Kampo

症状と漢方のお話

Gastrointestinal Disorders

We do not just indiscriminately prescribe stomach medicine simply because you have an upset stomach. We will ask you questions such as, "Where exactly does it hurt?", "What kind of pain is it?", "When does it get worse?", "What is your constitution?", "What are your specific symptoms?", and "How are your bowel movements?" to formulate a Kampo medicine perfectly suited to you.

Constipation

When using Kampo medicine for constipation, it is important to stimulate the intestinal tract to activate peristalsis (the movement that shifts and excretes intestinal contents) or to moisturize the intestinal tract to help stool move smoothly. Kampo medicines utilized often contain crude drugs like Rhubarb (Daio) to stimulate the intestines, Rehmannia root (Jio), Hemp seed (Mashinin), and Mirabilite (Bosho) for moisture, and Dried ginger (Kankyo) and Japanese pepper (Sansho) to warm the intestines.

Hemorrhoids

In Kampo, the cause of hemorrhoids is considered to be "Oketsu" (blood stasis), which broadly means stagnation of the blood. If there is bleeding, Kampo medicines containing hemostatic herbs like Mugwort (Gaiyo) or Donkey-hide gelatin (Akyo) are used. If pain and heat are severe, Gypsum (Sekko) is used, and if suppuration (pus formation) is advancing, Platycodon root (Kikyo) and Licorice (Kanzo) are also prescribed. If the wound or suppuration is relatively on the surface, Shiunko (Purple Cloud Ointment) suppositories are also effective.

Obesity (Weight Loss)

For obesity, the appropriate Kampo medicine changes significantly depending on whether the individual has a solid, robust constitution (apple-shaped obesity/high stamina) or a water-retention constitution (pear-shaped obesity/low stamina). For those with high stamina, we actively use Kampo containing herbs like Ephedra (Mao) and Rhubarb (Daio) that activate metabolism. For those with lower stamina, we use Kampo containing herbs like Poria mushroom (Bukuryo), Water plantain (Takusha), and Atractylodes rhizome (Byakujutsu), which improve water imbalance and metabolism.

Gout

Symptoms vary widely, from intense heat or severe pain in the affected area (especially joints in the fingers and toes) to severe joint swelling. Therefore, Kampo treatment methods also differ for each case. Since many patients with gout have high stamina, we actively use Kampo containing herbs like Ephedra (Mao) and Rhubarb (Daio) to activate metabolism. Otherwise, we use herbs like Cnidium rhizome (Senkyu), Peach kernel (Tonin), and Cinnamon bark (Keihi) to improve blood flow, or Gypsum (Sekko) to remove heat from the skin, depending on the symptoms.

Urticaria (Hives)

Kampo medicine is particularly effective for chronic hives, cases where antihistamines are continuously used, or when side effects like drowsiness are problematic. It is also effective for hives exacerbated by stress. Since symptoms such as dryness, dampness, blisters, suppuration, itching, pain, heat, and redness vary, it is important to select and take the appropriate Kampo medicine according to the specific condition.

Eczema

In Kampo treatment, it is essential to check not only the skin condition but the state of the entire body. We comprehensively select a Kampo medicine based on the patient's constitution—whether they are frail, robust, or overweight, or if they have poor blood circulation and constipation—after assessing the skin condition (e.g., whether it is acute or chronic, the degree of itching and redness, amount of discharge, or dryness).

Infertility

Aside from organic disorders in the fallopian tubes or cervix, infertility can be caused by endometriosis, anovulation or amenorrhea due to hormonal imbalances, or systemic issues like obesity, being underweight, stress, and overwork. There are also women-specific symptoms such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), dysmenorrhea, menstrual cramps, and uterine fibroids. This largely stems from one's original constitution. Generally, it is often related to hormonal balance and appears in connection with menstruation.

Uterine Fibroids

In Kampo treatment, uterine fibroids are thought to form due to poor blood circulation, and treatments are directed accordingly. While large fibroids may not necessarily shrink, Kampo is useful for improving subjective symptoms and preventing progression.

Menstrual Cramps

Kampo medicine works effectively against physical disharmony caused by hormonal imbalances or mental stress. Considering the habit-forming nature and side effects of continuous use of painkillers, it is best to avoid them when possible, making Kampo a highly recommended alternative.

Cold Sensitivity

From a Kampo perspective, the causes of cold sensitivity are broadly divided into two: Yang deficiency (Yokyo) and Blood deficiency (Kekkyo). Coldness due to Yang deficiency is caused by a lack of "Yang energy" (Yoki), which worsens blood flow, turning into blood stasis (Oketsu) that further obstructs the flow of Yang energy. Because the body-warming Yang energy cannot reach the extremities, it causes coldness in the limbs and lower body. When water circulation also stagnates, the coldness spreads throughout the entire body.

Allergic Rhinitis

In Kampo treatment, allergic rhinitis is primarily considered to be "Water intoxication" (Suidoku), so we select Kampo medicines that remove dampness based on the symptoms and constitution. Additionally, during symptom-free periods, it is effective to improve overall health aimed at constitutional improvement.

Neuralgia

In Kampo treatment for neuralgia, it is often related to Water intoxication (Suidoku) and Blood stasis (Oketsu - poor blood circulation). Therefore, we select Kampo medicines tailored to the patient's constitution to eliminate these factors. Migraines are considered to be a state of "Qi reversal" (Kigyaku), where "Qi" (life energy) does not circulate properly and flows backward. To address this, we use Kampo medicines to restore normal Qi circulation and alleviate symptoms.

Lower Back Pain

Although it varies depending on external or internal factors, the key to treating lower back pain with Kampo is identifying when and how it hurts. Pain that moves is called "Wind" (Fu), pain accompanied by cold is "Cold" (Kan), and heavy, dull pain is "Dampness" (Shitsu). These tend to appear in combinations like Wind-Cold, Cold-Dampness, or Wind-Cold-Dampness. This is frequently seen in people whose lower back pain is affected by temperature and weather.

Cystitis

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), frequent urination, a feeling of residual urine, and pain during urination are collectively called "Rin" (Strangury). Regardless of whether it is bacterial or non-bacterial, cystitis is treated as "Rin syndrome" (Rinsho). By observing the state of urination pain, coldness, fatigue, and neurological factors, we identify the exact type—for example, "Heat Rin" for inflammation and pain, "Fatigue Rin" from exhaustion, or "Cold Rin" from chilliness—and prescribe the appropriate Kampo medicine for each.
